Does anyone worship Priapus? I haven't heard him being mentioned very much. In knowing how many size queens are out there, I'd anticipate hearing people having a dialogue with him.

Comments anyone?

Priapus is a god of fertility, protector of horticulture and viticulture. His statue, holding a wooden sickle in his hand, was used in the Roman gardens as scarecrow, and his enormous penis as a threat against thieves.

.... I didnt before but I might start now.. lol

Well..., I've heard that there's a San Francisco chapter of the Church of Priapus. I knew there was some gay group that worshipped cock but that was years ago. I haven't heard much of that group recently. I wonder if they're still around.

St. Priapus Church (French: Eglise S. Priape) is a North American religion founded in the 1980s that centres on the worship on the phallus.

St. Priapus Church was founded in Montreal, Quebec by D. F. Cassidy and has found a following mainly among homosexual men in Canada and the United States. The church, which is named after the Greek god Priapus, teaches that the phallus is the source of life, beauty, joy, and pleasure.[1] The phallus is to be worshipped, which can be accomplished by a variety of sexual acts, including group masturbation.[2] Semen is also treated with reverence and its consumption is an act of worship.[1]

There are nine centres of the church in Canada and eight in the United States. The largest membership of the church reside in San Francisco, California and it is headquartered in Montreal.

          PRIAPUS TEMPLE

Welcum to the TEMPLE OF COCK!

From the earliest days of civilization in practically all cultures, there has been a devotion to Life and its Source. There is evidence of Beauty created by PRIPAUS, our God, as a tool, a path to Truth, for freedom and liberation. The Worship of Cock is our Gnostic path. Heed the demands of the COCK and Truth shall be revealed to you. Worship the Great and Holy COCK as the one true source of Truth and Growth.

COCK WORSHIP: Priapian cock- worship began over 4000 in India , and 3000 years ago in Asia Minor, then moved to Greece and Egypt. However, it is even found in our Christian-Buddhist-Islam time. In some early Christian communities, there were sects involved in erotic worship, often in the nude in which ritual intercourse was part of the worship experience. We have witness to this in some of the Pagan Roman writings in criticism of the Christians. Likewise, we can appreciate the interest and prevalence of these sectarians by the repressive actions taken by the Judaic-Christian communities in the course of religious history. Nevertheless, our Temple devoted to the COCK has survived all down through the ages until once again we are proudly proclaiming the Power and Beauty of the COCK. It is that Power, the Greatness of the COCK, that can destroy evil.

WHY NOW! To a great extent the people who worship the Phallus have come to recognize the beauty of the COCK and its creative Power as well as its being the source of Joy and Pleasure. It is more importantly, the binding force in humanity. It is found in all forms of sex - gay, bi or straight. They are incomplete until one realizes that the great importance of the COCK above and beyond a temporal vehicle of pleasure and procreation, is a spiritual path. Devotees have been inspired to search for a deeper meaning to sexual expression, and have through mediation come to realize that the COCK is the Source of Life, Joy, Beauty and Pleasure. Hence, it is an honourable part of the Body and worthy of worship. When we all realize this obvious Fact and understand that the COCK as part of a new and beautiful act, the act of peace, love and beauty, will conquer evil, leaving only peace and Love. Let us adore the COCK as the path to spiritual enlightenment and use it as a magical connection from this dimension to the next. Your COCK IS A TEMPLE OF PRIAPUS. WORSHIP IT with pride!

COCK WORSHIP can take many forms. The COCK is to be honoured, no matter of race, age or personal beauty. Barriers which might exist in other social situations must fall, for during the services the outlook of the devotee is enriched in such a way that s/he ignores previous prejudices. The COCK has become Beauty itself. Its emission is regarded with reverence and joyfully consumed in communion with others present. Furthermore, the COCK is never mutilated through personal choice, but may be enhanced to focus its beauty before our eyes. The COCK SHOULD BE SHOWN TO ANY ALL WHO WISH TO WORSHIP IT. Deny not the call of the Phallus. Let it take command and show you your own path to the truth. COCKS are revered by all men and some women. All are encouraged to worship the Holy Organ. The COCK is a beacon for all to see. The Light shines form the Dick; Follow it to Nirvana.

Worship experiences as a Priapic Community occur regularly in many cities and countries. Some are organized as Temples, (see list), while others are individual or groups yearning to becum a Temple of COCK. All members MUST devote a minimum 4 hours a week to servicing the COCK, your own &/or others. You decide the method of devotion, eg. sex magic or other Gnostic expressions. Truly, this form of sexual communication commends itself to the needs of many in society and should be encouraged. As a worshipper of the Phallus, your role is to tell others of your belief in the Power of the COCK to conquer Evil through Word of Mouth to those who might be isolated from our church. This is a vital part of your devotion to our Temple of Love.

          HAIL PRIAPUS!

            Summoning Priapus

            Sun, July 6, 2008 - 9:09 PM
Wow! Thank you for such a well written reply. I'm curious though, with all the wonderfully high sexual energy gay men can bring to a ritual, has anyone been able to summon Priapus to manifest on the physical plane?

Your question about manifesting Priapus on the physical plane makes me posit a question, what do you mean by that?
The spiritual energy taking a momentary physical embodiment?

Physical Divine Possession (similar as to what practitioners of Santeria/Vodou have?)

Turning a rather ordinary gathering of gay men into a cock worshipping orgy?

other examples that I can't think of?
              Just curious...

By manifesting on the physical plane I mean to say that Priapus literally appears physically and engages in a dialog with its summoner. While practically all the info on Priapus relates to being a god of nature and a promoter of a bountiful harvest, I'm curious as to how Priapus would describe himself. Perhaps in being sooo gay, I find it hard to believe that a god with such an enormous appendage wouldn't have more stories of him rolling in the hay. From my point of veiw, Cerrunos looks better suited as a watchman over the flora and fauna. While Priapus looks more like the inspiration for what bunnies do best.

I think that would be a fun working.

I suspect that the reason why there isn't more stories about Priapus is that in most depictions that I have found or heard of, he is a rather unattractive dwarf where his cock is at least twice as big as he is. But then, I suppose that would make a perfectlu suitable god fo size queens.

You haven't seen the depictions I have seen of Cernunnos. Lets just say, baby got front.

There was a Church of St. Priapus in San Francisco in the 70's & 80's. It was on Grove St. in the home of a guy whose name was some thing like Father Broshears. I should be able to remeber his name as I attended "services" once and took a bunch of their literature, which 25 years later I donated to the LGBT Historical Society of Northern California.
I remember the literature had a lot of information about Pagan phallus worship, including accounts of the church castrating members of these cults in medieval Europe. They even had a drawing of the castration instruments they used.
The service I attended found me sitting in a circle with men in their 50's & 60's, I was in my 20's, in the small house of Father 'Bro".
They were very serious about their services and rituals invoking phallic deities, Pan, Cerrunos, & others. I found myself liking the ritual & ceremony, which initially I was afraid would be boring, but bored with the circle jerk at the end which I thought would be the exciting part.
I'm sure that this was because I was so young and wasn't sexually attracted to the older men there. They were very nice guys and I thought their little church was very cool, but I never went back. The Church of St. Priapus received their 501-C3 status in 1983.
In '84 when the baths closed some of the St. Priapus church guys opened up a fabulous secret sex club in a big 2 flat on Clementina St. between 9th & 8th St.'s. This place had guys of all ages, served free beer, had a backyard too, upstairs mazes, glory wholes and above that empty rooms with pillows on the floor, black lites etc. They were open all night too. The place had no fire exit, lots of people smoking cigs & joints, but fortunately no fire ever happened.
They lasted about 10 years on word of mouth, never raising the $5 cover, until the Police finally shut them down. I've lived in SF since 1977 so I thought some of the younger faeires might be interested in this almost forgotten piece of SF gay history.-Jerry the Faerie

isn't Priapus also the brother of Hermaphrodite..both offspring of Aphrodite and Hermes? A very nice family as I understand it. Certainly worthy of a bow down...let us take a moment to contemplate the blessings of Priapus. Not to be confused with Priapism....Remember, if you experience an erection lasting more than four hours, consult your health care professional right away. Then look me up.

Bravo my dear!!! You sound very well read yourself. If someone experiences an erection lasting longer than four hours, what a doctor does to relieve the erection isn't that much fun either. Hehehehe....

Hermeticbear does bring up an interesting point.....make whatever you will of the puns that are all over that one! Cernnunos, Pan, The Great Horned One....well, all pretty much metaphor for the great big erection wielding male energy...worshipped or feared the world over. It seems to me that phallus worship would be one of the primary interests of all men. It would make for a more peaceful world....to embrace that energy rather than get all strung out about it. I think it would be nice to organize a big Jack-off-In for World Peace, conducted around a massive multi media Lingam that should be constructed in Golden Gate park specifically for that purpose, and dedicated to all of the lost Gods of the penis that have been given such a bad rap...and quite literally demonized.

As always when gay men get together and chat, I'm so impressed with the vast knowledge that gay men collect. It often makes me wonder if the "gay gene" is also linked to the the "smart gene."

              Just my two cents

I sure hope this thread doesn't die. My belief that Cock is God is unwavering. My dedication to the adoration, honor and service of the phallus is the constant thread of truth in my life. I want to have a true sanctuary for worshiping cock here in Seattle.
